The Function of Music

In General, music is very important for community of life, both western and eastern music. The function of music for people include the following :

1) As An Entertainment

People in general realize music as a entertainment needs. In different countries, most of the people use it just for tired relievers from the routine of the daily life. Type of music as a media of entertainment in its development is largely determined by popular culture that occurred. Examples, dance music at 1930 until 1940 and rock music at 1950. In Indonesia, dangdut music created and appear on 1970 and become popular until now.

Radio, canned music, cinema movie, television, and internet give the direction to te musical imagery as a media of entertainment. In one snap, popular music can reach the international and always become a profit scraper.

2) As A Therapy

Music for medical (music therapy), especially in western, occured after the 2nd world war. In the first instance, music is used to cure diseases of the patients victims of war and for war veterans. Nowadays, the using of music therapy has done in some hospitals in Eropa, United States, and Canada, especially for mentall illness or paralysis of organs.

3) As A Media to Increase Intelligence

The human brain divided into two parts, namely right hemisphere and left hemisphere. Thus the findings from Dr. Roger W. Sperry for his services have won the Nobel prize in 1981. Balancing the two parts of the brain can influence the human intelligence. The left brain is the control center of intellectual function such as memory, language, logic, calculation, power analysis, and convergent thinking. The right brain based on spontaneity and control of mental function that involves intuition, attitudes, emotions, spatial relationships and dimension, pictures, music and rhythm, movement and dance, as well as divergent thinking. Music can be used as a means of balancing the right and left brain. Aesthetic power of music can be used as an addition to intelligence (IQ)
